3 Residential Grout and Tile Combinations that Work

residential flooring

When people think about tiling options for residential flooring, grout is generally lower on the list than thinking of the tile itself. While choosing the right tile is essential, matching the tile with the appropriate grout is just as important. When choosing grout for your residential flooring needs, remember that not all grout is created equal. Read below to understand the three primary different types of grout and see how they work with different tiling options.

  1. Non-sanded grout works great with small tiles, especially in vertical spaces.

The reason people choose non-sanded grout is because it’s easier to work with than sanded grout.   It’s especially great in vertical spaces due to its sticky nature; you can place non-sanded grout on a wall, and it will stick there while you work with it. Since it is non-sanded, it shrinks when it cures and, thus, should only be used in small spaces of no more than 1/8 inch dimensions. If used in larger spaces, then non-sanded grout will shrink away from the tiles so much that it will pull away from them.

  1. Sanded grout is a great residential flooring option to use with spaces larger than 1/8 inch.

Sanded grout is the most popular residential flooring grout choice. It has small amounts of sand mixed in with the grout so that it does not shrink as much when it cures. This option is great for most spaces of this size but doesn’t work well with softer tile choices as it may scratch them.

  1. Epoxy grout is a great choice for almost any residential flooring tile option and works especially well with softer tiles.

Epoxy grout is the sturdiest grout option and normally does not contain sand or materials that would scratch soft tile. It is also the most waterproof residential flooring grout option. If you are using epoxy grout on softer tiles, make sure to test the area first to ensure no scratching occurs as some brands do contain small amounts of sand or sand-like elements. Epoxy grout is generally the best option for your residential flooring needs, but it is also the most expensive. However, the expense is often worthwhile as it is more durable and easier to work with than other options.
